George F Jowett System of Health & Muscle Building
Internal Force Fitness is pleased to present a FULL reproduction of The George F. Jowett Scientific Method of Building Health – Strength and Physical Perfection Through the Leverage Principles of the Human Body in Resisting Physical Gravitation course. Not the catchiest title in the world perhaps, but certainly descriptive! The course consists of 12 weekly lessons (week 4 is a test lesson), and all lessons and accompanying letters detailing how to progress are included in this single PDF reproduction.
This course was purchased by a young man in the late 1950’s, although I would suggest the content dates from earlier as Jowett makes reference to Staff Sgt. (Alfred) Moss, Ottley R. Coulter, and Herman Gorner. While these people remain to this day outstanding exponents of physical culture, even in the 1950s they were not exactly gracing the pages of Health & Strength magazine!
As always when using vintage material, I urge you to use common sense when attempting any of the exercises described in the coming pages (the neck exercises particularly). Jowett himself urges caution, and I echo that!
While apparatus as such is not required, you ARE going to need a chinning bar, some high-backed chairs, and a strong bar of some kind – OR a half-decent pull up/dip station.
It is very difficult not to get caught up in Jowett’s enthusiastic way of writing, and even if you read the content as simply a piece of physical culture themed ‘self-help’ rather than an actual course of instruction, I honestly think you will come away with a strong desire to improve yourself physically.
Each course with the exception of Week 4 (which is a test week) is preceded by a letter giving you instructions on how to proceed with the course. This letter precedes the lesson plan in the books’ menu, so please don’t skip it, it is important.
Finally, I have made some changes to the text and layout, but only for clarity. Not all formatting in the original text was consistent from one lesson to the next (you can see we go from Fourth Week to Lesson Five for example). For me, part of the appeal of these courses is this type of discrepancy, and I would be doing a disservice to The Body Sculpture Club and George F. Jowett to change TOO much. (As to Jowett’s actual involvement in this course, well, I’ll leave that up to you do decide…)
